“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.”
―Herophilus
It's so easy to get caught up in work and being busy. We fill our days with things to do, places to be and people to see.
So much is expected from us it can be difficult to fit it all into one day. So, we work longer hours, sleep less and have to cut down time with friends or family and skip the gym this week.

This is the typical mindset, especially in the legal industry. There's almost a badge of honour for those that work around the clock. I've worked at firms where those that prioritised themselves and left at a reasonable hour to go to the gym or out for dinner with a friend, were gossiped about for being "slack".
It's not just the legal profession though, I see it all over the entrepreneurial forums and pages across the internet.
As if getting a full 8 hours sleep is something to be ashamed of.
Here's just 3 reasons why prioritising your physical and mental health will actually make you a better lawyer, barrister or business owner:
1. Your business doesn't thrive and grow unless you're am on your A game:
If you're feeling tired, stressed, flat and unhappy you're most certainly not putting out your best work.
You can coast while feeling this way and do what you have to do to get through the day but your business will be at a standstill.
2. Connecting and building relationships:
Chances are high that your clients and potential clients are humans.
As humans we have our own personal struggles, highs, lows, stories and reason for doing what we do.
The human condition is that we all want two things more than anything else:
Appreciation and understanding.
So your clients and potential clients (the aforementioned humans) want to work with people who make them feel good, appreciated and understood. People who remember their name, a story they told or take time to understand them (and their needs).
That is a difficult task if you're tired, stressed, lacking focus or too busy with menial tasks (see our e-guide on delegating).

3. Billion dollar ideas come when you give yourself time to think
"Art cannot manifest... intelligence cannot be applied"
You come up with your best ideas when you're in a good healthy headspace and you allow yourself time to think.
We live in a world full of unlimited distractions, iPhones, emails, Netflix.
Every single spare moment in our day is filled with mindless scrolling or texting.
Our brains need us to be bored more often though. That's where we solve problems and discover solutions. I'm not just making this stuff up because it sounds good, it's science.
In boredom we give our brains the chance to go into the "default network" and do something called "autobiographical planning"
"The default network is a set of functionally connected brain regions engaged by self-generated thought and active across multiple functional domains including memory, future-thinking, and social cognition"
Allowing yourself time to be bored and think clearly should be a top priority. Start scheduling it into your week as a non-negotiable.
Your next idea could be what takes your practice, business or career to the next level.
If you'd like to learn some more about the benefits of being bored, this is a great TedTalk on the subject.
That's all from me today.
Please take care of yourselves and each other.
